 The Seventh Annual Meeting of the World Association ofChinese Characters Studies Holding Successfully

 On September 26, 2019, The seventh Annual Meeting of theWorld Association of Chinese Characters Studies” was successfully convened in RitsumeikanUniversity in Kyoto, Japan. The theme of this conference that was co-sponsoredby the Center for the Study and Application of Chinese Characters of ECNU,Key ResearchInstitute of Humanities and Social Sciences of Ministry of Education, theChinese Character Culture Research Group of the Korean Character Institute, andthe Shirakawa Kanji Memorial of the Toyo Language and Culture Institute ofRitsumeikan University, was "ImportantFields and Issues in Chinese Character Research all over the World".

  At the opening ceremony, Prof. Zang Kehe, President ofthe World Chinese Character Society and Director of the Center for the Studyand Application of Chinese Characters of ECNU, Key Research Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences of Ministry of Education, delivered the openingceremony, and Mr. Hiroshi Sugisuki from Ritsumeikan UniversityJapan gave a welcome speech, and Professor Niu Gushan, President of Ritsumeikan University,and Prof. Mei Bing, Vice President of ECNU, delivered a congratulatory message. During this period, Professor Zang Kehe presented the latest major achievements of the Center for the Study and Application of Chinese Characters of ECNU, Font Style Collection of the Qin, Han, Southern ,andNorthern Dynasties, and the International periodical Journal of Chinese Writing Systems.

  After the opening ceremony, around the theme of theconference, "Important Fields andIssues of Chinese Characters all over the World", Professor Christoph Harbsmeier of the University of Oslo, Norway, Professor Zang Kehe of ECNU,Professor He Yongsan of Qingxing University,Korea, Prof. Zhu Yongxiang from Donghae University,Taiwan,China, Professor Li Guijia from Yonsei University,Korea, and Professor Daisuke Ikeda from Hokkaido University in Japan gavekeynote speeches to the conference. The representative of the intelligent Chinese cognitive intelligence research team of the Research Center of ECNU introduced the latest research and development technology product “ShangzhouJinwen Zhineng Jing”, and issued that the “Shangzhou Jinwen Network Database”developed by the Research Center of ECNU was formally opened to global application. Prof. Ikeda, Professor of Japan, introduced the “Japanese Ancient Dictionary Database”

  During the next three days, the participants weredivided into 12 Discussion groups of 7 research directions--“Research of Chinese characters in Handwritting literature”, “Research of Chinese characters in Handwritting literature”, “culture and history research of Chinese characters”, “usage and variant type of Chinese characters” “Deep processing of Chinese character database” “Chinese character cognition and teaching” “stuty of Chinese Character from  countries outside China ”.These 7 topics were published and heatedly discussed.

  At the closing ceremony, the Study and Application of Chinese Characters of ECNU, the Chinese Character Research Institute of Qingxing University, and the Ritsumeikan University of Japan Ritsumeikan University signed a tripartite cooperation agreement to organize and digitizethe Chinese literature among the three countries. Research conducts extensiveand in-depth cooperation. Professor He Yongsan, Secretary General of the World Chinese Character Society, summarized the current annual meeting. Professor Zang Kehe announced that the 8th annual meeting will be held at Yonsei University inKorea. Prof. Li Guijia, President of the World Chinese Character Society and Yakusei University of Korea, presented the beautiful campus environment of Yonsei University to the delegates, and welcomed the world's Chinese character research scholars to gather in Seoul next year.

     After the meeting, Prof. Christoph Harbsmeier of Norway,Prof. Junjun Qiang of Vietnam, Professor Daechee of Japan, Professor He Yongsanof Korea, and Professor Zang Kehe of China gave a series of lectures to Japanese people at the Ritsumeikan University in Japan,which gave a  positive impact on Japanese culture.

  More than 80 experts and scholars from differentuniversities and research centers all over the world attended this annualmeeting.

  This conference was another extensive exchange and cooperation between Chinese scholars and scholars around the world. A series ofresearch results on Chinese characters were published at the conference,demonstrating the influence of Chinese characters and Chinese characters on aglobal scale. In particular, the digitalization results and intelligent achievements of Chinese characters displayed in countries such as China, Japan and Korea fully prove that the study of Chinese characters worldwide is being combined with cutting-edge big data and artificial intelligence to explore new models and new disciplines based on interdisciplinary development.
